The Top 4 Plumbing Tips For Fall

The leaves are changing, the air is cooling, and your plumbing needs tending! We’re in the thick of autumn, and winter is just around the bend. That’s why it’s so important to tackle these four plumbing tasks sooner rather than later to make sure your home is protected from the elements.

1. Winterize your outdoor plumbing. Remove, drain and store your garden hose and be sure to shut off the hose bib itself. While you’re at it, have a professional come blow out your automatic sprinkler system and flip the shutoff valves that control all of your outdoor spigots.
2. Insulate both indoor and outdoor pipes. Any outdoor faucets, bibs or pipes should be covered and properly insulated. That way, you won’t have to worry about damage from freezing temperatures.The same should be done for your indoor pipes. A frozen, burst pipe can spell trouble, but a little insulation can go a long way!
3. Flush your water heater. Over time, sediment can build up in your water heater’s tank, compromising its ability to heat your home’s water efficiently. Luckily, keeping your water heater in tip-top shape is as easy as flush, rinse, refill!
4. Test your sump pump. Your sump pump is only worthwhile if it’s working! Don’t get caught in the dead of winter with a flooded basement. (Especially one caused by a busted pipe — see tip number two.) Make sure your sump pump is fully functioning by putting it to the test. Simply fill the basin with water to make sure the pump kicks on. If it doesn’t put a call in to your local pros!
