Retrieving Lost Jewelry From Your Sink
Whether you knocked your ring off the counter and into the sink, or you forget to take your earrings off before getting in the shower, your jewelry may not be lost forever. To remove your valuables from down the drain, you’ll want to act quickly and use one of our following methods.
In the Bathroom, Garbage Disposal or Kitchen Sink
Try the Magnet Trick
Sometimes, all we need is a little bit of magic (and luck). Tie a magnet to a string, and lower it down the drain slowly. If your jewelry is made of gold or silver, however, it won’t be magnetic. You’ll need to try another method.
Shut Off Your Water Supply
Use your hot and cold water shut-off valves located under the sink, or turn off the main water supply to your home. This will allow you to stop the flow of water in your pipe system.
Remove Your P-Trap
The P-trap is the U-shaped pipe under your sink, and most have drain plugs. Place a bucket under your P-trap to prevent any debris from making a mess of your home. If your trap has a plug, remove it to release the water. You can take your trap apart but loosening the slip nuts on either side. Pour out any remaining water, and you should find your jewelry.
In the Shower Drain
Remove Your Drain Cover
Grab a screwdriver and remove the screws holding the drain cover on, or simply pop it off if you don’t see any screws. You can try to remove your jewelry with a flexible retrieval tool.
Use a Wet-Dry Vacuum
If you can’t locate your jewelry after removing your drain cover, try sucking it out with a wet-dry vacuum. Using the wet setting, insert the open end of the vacuum hose into the drain until you reach the bottom. Remove the hose, holding it straight, while the vacuum is still running.
If the jewelry got caught in the hose, you should see it in the vacuum tank. Turn the vacuum off, and sift through the debris to find your jewelry.
