Common AC Problems We Solve

If you’re experiencing an issue with your air conditioner, Dean’s is here to help. We repair all types of air conditioning systems, including central air conditioning systems, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, and more. These are some of the most common AC problems that we encounter and resolve in the Minneapolis area.

Warm air

When your AC is blowing hot or barely cold air, it’s time to contact our AC repair company right away. This common issue may be due to dirty evaporator coils or a malfunctioning compressor. If your air conditioner has low refrigerant levels, this might also be the cause of warm air coming from your AC.

Leaks

Water leaking from or pooling around your air conditioner is quite concerning. A clogged condensate drain line or a rusty/cracked drain pan can lead to frozen coils, causing leaks and pooling. In most cases, a leaking AC is caused by a refrigerant line issue that requires the skills of a HVAC technician.

Short cycling

Short cycling occurs when your air conditioner turns on and off frequently before it reaches the pre-set temperature. This frustrating problem is usually due to restricted airflow (from dirty ducts or air filters) or low refrigerant levels. Your AC may also be short-cycling due to a faulty thermostat or an electrical issue.

Airflow issues

Weak airflow can make it feel as if your AC isn’t working at all. This common problem is often caused by a dirty air filter or a failing blower motor. Blocked vents or excess debris inside your ductwork can also impact air conditioning airflow.

Our AC Repair Process

A typical AC repair should take approximately 30 minutes to two hours for minor fixes, and between two and four hours or more for more complex issues. Here’s how the AC repair process at Dean’s Home Services works:

  • Step one: One of our skilled technicians arrives at your home and performs a comprehensive diagnostic test to determine the cause of the issue.
  • Step two: We give you a detailed estimate for the repairs that includes our next steps and pricing.
  • Step three: Upon your approval, we begin the process to fix or replace components and make any other repairs listed in the estimate.
  • Step four: When the repairs are complete, we clean up our work area and thoroughly test your air conditioner to confirm that everything is working correctly.

24/7 Emergency AC Repair

If you encounter an urgent issue with your home comfort system, you can’t afford to wait for AC repairs once the summer temperatures in Minneapolis start to climb. Dean’s provides reliable emergency AC repair services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you encounter an issue with your air conditioning system, don’t hesitate to contact us, and we’ll send someone to your home as soon as possible to resolve the problem and restore comfort to your home fast.

Signs You Need AC Repair

Look for these signs that may indicate you need professional AC repairs:

  • Unusually high energy bills: If you notice that your energy bills are higher than normal despite no change in usage, call us for repairs right away.
  • Air conditioner won’t turn on: An AC that won’t turn on may have a broken thermostat, an extremely dirty air filter, or another problem that needs professional attention.
  • Can’t keep your home cool enough: A refrigerant leak is one of the most common reasons why your AC can’t keep your home cool enough and requires assistance from a qualified technician.
  • Air quality is getting worse and humidity is increasing: Worsening air quality and a noticeable increase in humidity could be due to an improperly sized unit, a malfunctioning component, or another issue that requires professional repair.
  • Strange sounds: Loud or strange banging, hissing, screeching, or rattling sounds coming from your indoor or outdoor unit are a sign of a loose or broken component, a refrigerant leak, or electrical issues.
  • Air conditioner smells musty: Unpleasant musty odors coming from your AC are typically due to excess moisture buildup that is causing mold to grow, which requires professional diagnosis and repairs.

AC Repair vs Replacement

Not all AC problems require a full replacement. However, it’s important to know when you should get AC repairs versus when a complete system replacement is the better option for you.

When to repair

AC repair is recommended when:

  • Your equipment is newer (less than 10 years old).
  • The problem is minor and easily fixable.
  • The cost of the repair is less than 50% of a new unit.
  • You can fix the issue yourself (like change the air filter).

When to replace

Consider replacing your AC if you encounter these issues:

  • Your air conditioner is around 10 years old or older.
  • You experience frequent, recurring issues.
  • The cost to repair your AC is 50% or more of the cost of a new one.
  • You’re ready to upgrade to a more energy-efficient air conditioner.

DIY AC Repair vs Professional

Some AC issues are easily fixable on your own, like replacing the air filter, clearing the drain lines, or cleaning the coils. If you’re not sure how to fix your AC, or if you don’t know the cause of the problem, it’s always best to rely on the experienced HVAC professionals at Dean’s Home Services. Major AC issues that aren’t fixed by a qualified technician can void your manufacturer’s warranty, cost you more money to resolve, and could potentially make the problem worse in the long run. Plus, professional AC repairs are done safely to resolve the issue, giving you invaluable peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AC repair cost on average in Minnesota?

The average AC repair cost in Minneapolis varies based on a few factors, including the cause and severity of the issue. Minor, simple repairs tend to cost much less than serious, more complex air conditioning issues that require replacing a major component or more labor to complete.

Should I turn off my AC if I think it’s broken?

Yes, you should turn your AC off if you think it’s broken and call Dean’s Home Services for repairs. Leaving your AC on could lead to more serious issues and may cause excess wear and tear or system failure that will cost more to fix.

Why is my air conditioner constantly running but not cooling the house?

If your air conditioner is constantly running but not cooling the house, it could be due to low refrigerant levels, frozen evaporator coils, or a dirty air filter. Other common causes include a dirty outdoor condenser unit, blocked or leaky ductwork, or thermostat issues.

Customer Satisfaction is our #1 Priority What Dean’s Customers are saying
I recently bought a new house and quite a few things needed upgrading / replacing. Deans has done fantastic work on all these things. Scheduling is fast and easy. They are able to come out quickly to assess it and give an estimate. And they can quickly schedule the service. All the technicians have been fantastic. Friendly, and quick and efficient. I am so glad I am a member and I will recommend Deans to anyone. Mark B.
Matthew came for a general plumbing inspection. He was friendly and polite and even a little bit early for his appointment. That is a wonderful thing. He checked all the toilets and sinks, the water heater and water softener. All the while explaining what he was doing. He had some ideas on a few repairs but wasn't an alarmist about it. Things that just had to be done, sooner than later, but not immediately. The Dean's club membership is definitely worth it. Susan M.
Eric B was awesome and informative. Today he came and gave us a rundown of our new homes air ventilation and Furnace/AC systems so we are all ready for winter and beyond. We had Dean's install a new furnace, ac and water heater at our previous home and they did such a wonderful job and so easy to work with we will only use them from now on. Thanks again for a wonderful experience. Jayme K.
I had Dean's come out a couple times for different services. Once to install venting for a bath fan and once for service for my furnace. There were no surprises in pricing and service was quick. Sam was the tech both times and he did a great job for both jobs. For the furnace, he diagnosed the issue within minutes of starting the work and got it up and running quickly. They had all the parts in the truck already. As far as the appointment, I requested service online, had a call back within 15 min and the tech was in my driveway an hour later. I would highly recommend Dean's. Dan P.
Of the several electricians I contacted, Dean's offered by far the quickest dispatch time, which is great because my thermostat broke and wouldn't start my A/C at all. Given that temperatures are supposed to reach 98 degrees tomorrow, time was of the essence. Thankfully, Dean's had someone out within an hour. I worked with Seth, who was professional, helpful and knowledgeable. He ran a 'C' wire to our new smart thermostat and got it installed in about an hour at a reasonable price. I will definitely recommend Dean's to anyone who needs an electrician. Michael Y.
