Trenchless Sewer Pipe Line Repair in Minneapolis & St. Paul
When a sewer line is leaking due to age, damage, or because of tree root infiltration, the most common way to fix it is by digging up the failing pipe and replacing it. The process of digging the sewer line up can be messy, inconvenient, and expensive, especially if the part of the sewer line that needs replacing is close to driveways, walkways, or landscaping.
You can avoid having large portions of your yard dug up by using a trenchless sewer line repair service. Also known as “no-dig sewer line repair,” this type of sewer repair is effective, avoids much of the inconvenient mess of a typical sewer line repair, and typically only takes a few days to complete.
What Is Trenchless Sewer Line Repair?
Trenchless sewer repair is a way of repairing or replacing a sewer pipe that is damaged or otherwise leaking heavily. Instead of digging a trench to access the leaking pipe, then performing repairs or replacing the pipe, a trenchless repair uses small holes at either end of the damaged pipe to access and repair the pipes from within.
How Trenchless Pipe Repair Works
There are two primary types of sewer line repair that are used as part of the trenchless sewer line repair or replacement process. Both methods of repair require minimal excavation to complete; typically just one hole at each end of the pipe that needs to be replaced.
Trenchless Sewer Repair Methods
The first method of repair that can be used as part of trenchless sewer repair is called epoxy pipe lining, a flexible epoxy-impregnated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and expanded with compressed air. Once the epoxy cures, the liner forms a new, rigid pipe with a service life of about 50 years.
In the second method, called pipe bursting, a cable is threaded through the existing sewer line, and a special head is attached at the opposite end. As the cable is drawn back through the sewer line, it expands and breaks the pipe while simultaneously dragging in a new polyethylene sewer line to fit inside the old pipe. This method has a similar service life of 50 years or longer.

Trenchless vs. Traditional Pipe Repair
Trenchless pipe repair or replacement is not appropriate for all sewer line repairs. If there are too many curves, bellies, or elbows in the pipe or if the soil around the pipe has collapsed, it may not be possible to clear the debris from the existing pipe or insert the new pipe. In these cases, conventional digging and pipe replacement will be required. With our sewer camera pipe inspections, our team at Dean’s can evaluate your sewer lines and recommend the repair option that is right for your St. Paul home.
We offer both standard and trenchless sewer line repairs, and our team can recommend the best method for your specific needs and budget. We serve the larger Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and we feature highly skilled plumbers who are friendly, dedicated, professional, and ready to work.
