When Should You Replace Your Water Heater?

water heater installation minneapolis | dean's professional plumbing, heating, air & drainsWater heaters are often overlooked — until you find yourself struggling through an icy cold shower. So how do you know when you need to replace your water heater BEFORE it’s too late? Here are a few signs that you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater:

It’s an old water heater.

How old is the water heater in your home? If it’s over 10 years old, you may want to look into a replacement. Older water heaters are more likely to fail. You can determine the age of your water heater by taking a look at the serial number. This number will contain the date that the water heater was manufactured. For example, if your water heater has a serial number that starts with “H09…”, this means that your water heater was built in 2009. Look for those two numbers to determine the age of your water heater.

It’s noisy.

Over time, sediment builds up inside of your water heater tank — this is why it’s so important to flush your water heater once a year to keep it running smoothly! However, even with regular maintenance, your water heater may become damaged from the sediment over the years. If your notice some noisy rumbling coming from your tank, you may be due for a replacement.

It’s leaking.

Is there moisture pooling up around your water heater? Small leaks or fractures may cause water to leak out of your tank as the metal heats and expands.
