Frequently Asked Home Electrical Questions
We get tons of phone calls from customers asking electrical questions. We compiled some of the top questions for anyone to use for reference.
What is a Short or Short Circuit?
A short or a short circuit is the same problem. It occurs when a hot wire comes in contact with the equipment ground or grounded conductor. The hot wire is the one that carries the electrical current. The grounded conductor is known as the white wire or the neutral. The equipment ground is known as the green wire or bare conductor.
Excess heat is created during a short circuit. A spark can be created during a short circuit. This can lead to a fire. Fortunately, a circuit breaker can prevent this from happening.
What is a GFCI Outlet?
A GFCI outlet is designed to stop you from suffering electric shock if moisture is around. If you have a home that was built after 1981, then you probably have GFCI outlets in your bathroom, garages, bedrooms, and bathrooms. You can tell whether an outlet is a GFCI outlet by seeing if there are two buttons on it.
A Light Fixture is Causing my Light Bulbs to Constantly Blow Out. Is This Caused by a Short in the Wires?
This problem is not caused by a short in the wires. Your circuit breaker protects you from the short circuits. You may be able to correct this problem by choosing a bulb with a lower wattage.
You will also need to check the voltage of your home. Many light bulbs are designed to run between 110 to 120 volts. Many homes have voltages that exceed 125 volts. A higher voltage will decrease the lifespan of your light bulbs.
