Common Summer Plumbing Problems for Homeowners

Plumbing emergencies happen when you least expect them. But when you know what to do in an emergency, and how to prevent common problems, you can keep things running smoothly through the summer season. These are a few of the most common problems homeowners are faced with during the summer months.

Common Summer Plumbing Problems:

  • Clogged Garbage Disposal – Ready for BBQ season? As you heat up the grill, and get dinner ready, remember to toss scraps in the trash — not in your garbage disposal. Many BBQ favorites can damage your drain. Stringy vegetables like corn husks will wrap around the disposal blades, starchy foods like potato salad will expand and cause a clog, and the hard bones from your BBQ ribs can bend and damage the blades.
  • Clogged Drain Lines – The warm summer months are perfect for growing plants. However, as deep-rooted trees grow, they also seek out water in the ground. If there is a leak or crack in your plumbing pipes, the roots will be drawn to that water source, and even grow inside of your pipes. This will clog your drain lines.
  • Clogged Toilets – Now that the kids are home from school, you’ll find that your bathroom is getting a lot more use. Make sure that if you have little ones in your home, you remind them of what they should and shouldn’t be flushing down the toilet.
  • Leaky Outdoor Faucet – After a long, cold winter, your outdoor hose bib might have suffered some damage. Check for leaks around the hose and hose bib when you go to fill the pool or wash your car!
