Top Causes of Floods in Minnesota Homes

There are a number of reasons that a home in Minnesota can flood, a sump pump can help protect your home from some of these common causes.

  • Location: Your home sits near a body of water (this is the land of 10,000 lakes) or your home sits on a low point.
  • Improper Drainage: The weeping tile (or drain tile) is a draining pipe used for underground water collection. It’s built under the basement floor level around the building to ensure water moves away and doesn’t seep into your home.
  • Plumbing Leaks: A frozen pipe that finally bursts, a clogged fixture, etc.
  • Broken Sump Pump/No Backup Battery: A sump pump is a draining device that keeps your basement dry and clear from groundwater. It collects excess water from the foundation or rainfall and drains it outside of your home.

How to Keep Your Sump Pump Running

Operational Tips

It’s important that your sump pump be working properly at all times – especially when just a little water can cause thousands of dollars in damage

  • Make sure it’s plugged in. This may seem like a no-brainer, but we’ve heard many stories about homeowners having trouble with their sump pump when it was simply not plugged in.
  • Manually lift the water float to make sure your sump pump kicks on. If it does, you can rest easy so that when water collects, it will be discarded.
  • If your sump pump is more than seven years old, consider replacing it with a newer model.

Do Plumbers fix Sump Pumps?

Yes, plumbers are often trained to repair and replace sump pumps. Sump pumps are a key component of many homes’ plumbing systems, and plumbers have the necessary skills and experience to diagnose and fix problems with these devices. In some cases, a plumber may need to work closely with an electrician to repair or replace a sump pump, as these devices often have electrical components. In general, if you are experiencing issues with your sump pump, it is best to contact a licensed plumber to assess the problem and recommend a solution.

What’s the most common reason for sump pump failure?

The most common reason for sump pump failure is a lack of maintenance and regular cleaning. Sump pumps are designed to remove water from your home’s foundation, but they can become clogged or damaged over time if they are not regularly maintained. Debris, such as dirt, gravel, and rocks, can accumulate in the sump pump’s basin and prevent the pump from working properly. In addition, the pump’s impeller, which is responsible for moving water out of the basin, can become damaged or stuck if it is not regularly cleaned. To avoid sump pump failure, it is important to regularly clean the sump pump’s basin and check the impeller for damage. Additionally, a licensed plumber can provide regular maintenance and inspections to help ensure your sump pump is working properly.

What is the average life of a sump pump?

The average lifespan of a sump pump is around 8 – 10 years, but this can vary depending on a number of factors. The type of sump pump you have, the quality of the pump, and how well it is maintained can all affect its lifespan. In general, sump pumps that are regularly maintained and not used excessively will last longer than those that are neglected or overworked. To extend the lifespan of your sump pump, it is important to clean the sump pump’s basin regularly and check the impeller for damage. Additionally, a licensed plumber can provide regular maintenance and inspections to help ensure your sump pump is working properly.

What to do if a sump pump stops working?

If your sump pump stops working, the first thing you should do is check the power source to make sure the pump is receiving electricity. If the power is on and the sump pump still isn’t working, you may need to reset the circuit breaker or check the pump’s fuse. If the sump pump still isn’t working, it may be due to a clog in the pump’s basin or a problem with the impeller. In this case, you may be able to clear the clog or remove debris from the impeller to get the sump pump working again. If these steps do not fix the problem, the sump pump may need to be repaired or replaced by a licensed plumber. It is important to address any issues with your sump pump as soon as possible, as a failing sump pump can cause water damage to your home.

Customer Satisfaction is our #1 Priority What Dean’s Customers are saying
I recently bought a new house and quite a few things needed upgrading / replacing. Deans has done fantastic work on all these things. Scheduling is fast and easy. They are able to come out quickly to assess it and give an estimate. And they can quickly schedule the service. All the technicians have been fantastic. Friendly, and quick and efficient. I am so glad I am a member and I will recommend Deans to anyone. Mark B.
Matthew came for a general plumbing inspection. He was friendly and polite and even a little bit early for his appointment. That is a wonderful thing. He checked all the toilets and sinks, the water heater and water softener. All the while explaining what he was doing. He had some ideas on a few repairs but wasn't an alarmist about it. Things that just had to be done, sooner than later, but not immediately. The Dean's club membership is definitely worth it. Susan M.
Eric B was awesome and informative. Today he came and gave us a rundown of our new homes air ventilation and Furnace/AC systems so we are all ready for winter and beyond. We had Dean's install a new furnace, ac and water heater at our previous home and they did such a wonderful job and so easy to work with we will only use them from now on. Thanks again for a wonderful experience. Jayme K.
I had Dean's come out a couple times for different services. Once to install venting for a bath fan and once for service for my furnace. There were no surprises in pricing and service was quick. Sam was the tech both times and he did a great job for both jobs. For the furnace, he diagnosed the issue within minutes of starting the work and got it up and running quickly. They had all the parts in the truck already. As far as the appointment, I requested service online, had a call back within 15 min and the tech was in my driveway an hour later. I would highly recommend Dean's. Dan P.
Of the several electricians I contacted, Dean's offered by far the quickest dispatch time, which is great because my thermostat broke and wouldn't start my A/C at all. Given that temperatures are supposed to reach 98 degrees tomorrow, time was of the essence. Thankfully, Dean's had someone out within an hour. I worked with Seth, who was professional, helpful and knowledgeable. He ran a 'C' wire to our new smart thermostat and got it installed in about an hour at a reasonable price. I will definitely recommend Dean's to anyone who needs an electrician. Michael Y.
