Heating & Cooling FAQs
Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
Your furnace could be blowing cool air for multiple reasons, including:
- Thermostat settings: Ensure it’s set to “HEAT” and the fan is on “AUTO.”
- Dirty air filter: A clogged filter can cause overheating and shutoff.
- Pilot light or ignition issues: The pilot may be out, or the ignition system may have failed.
- Flame sensor issues: A dirty sensor can shut off the burners.
- Gas supply problems: If there’s no gas flow, the furnace won’t heat.
How do I know if my thermostat is working properly?
- Check the display: A blank screen may mean dead batteries or a reset is needed.
- Compare temperatures: Use a separate thermometer to check accuracy.
- Adjust settings: Turn the temp up—if nothing happens, there may be an issue.
- Check wiring: Loose or damaged wires can cause malfunctions.
How often should I have my AC serviced?
We recommend that your AC is serviced at least once a year (preferably in spring) to check refrigerant levels, clean coils, inspect electrical connections, and ensure efficiency. Change air filters every 1-3 months.
Why does my AC smell musty when I turn it on?
If your AC smells musty, it is likely caused by mold or mildew in the system due to:
- Dirty coils – Moisture buildup leads to mold.
- Clogged drain line – Stagnant water breeds bacteria.
- Dirty filter – Traps odors and recirculates them.
- Duct issues – Mold in ducts spreads musty smells.
Fix: Replace the filter, flush the drain line with vinegar, clean coils, and consider a UV light for prevention.
What is Indoor Air Quality?
Put simply, indoor air quality is the quality of the air inside your home. It has to do with the amount of pollutants, but is also determined by humidity and ventilation levels.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside homes can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. If anyone in your family suffers from allergies or other respiratory problems, poor indoor air quality is only making their conditions worse.
How Can I Improve IAQ?
There are four main steps to improving the quality of air inside your home: eliminate, ventilate, clean and monitor. The first step is to find the sources of air pollutants and get rid of them if possible. The second step is to keep your home ventilated. Open up windows and doors when the weather is nice outside and make sure to clean the filters in your HVAC system regularly. Clean your home by vacuuming and make sure to use anti-bacterial cleaners in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Finally, you can reduce and monitor humidity levels with a dehumidification system.
Plumbing Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my water pressure low?
Low water pressure can be caused by several factors, including:
- Clogged pipes or aerators – Mineral buildup can restrict water flow. Cleaning faucet aerators and showerheads may help.
- Leaking pipes – Even small leaks can reduce pressure. Check for visible leaks and listen for running water.
- Municipal supply issues – Sometimes, the problem is with the city’s water supply. Checking with your local water provider can rule this out.
- Faulty pressure regulator – If your home has a pressure regulator, it may need adjustment or replacement.
- Partially closed shut-off valve – Ensure your home’s main water valve is fully open.
If your water pressure remains low, contact Dean’s Home Services for professional diagnosis and solutions.
How often should I flush my water heater?
It’s recommended to flush your water heater once a year to remove sediment buildup, which can affect efficiency and shorten its lifespan.
For homes with hard water, flushing every six months can help prevent mineral deposits from accumulating too quickly.
What is the best way to unclog a drain without damaging my pipes?
The safest and most effective way to unclog a drain is to call Dean’s Home Services. Our professional plumbers have the right tools and expertise to clear even the toughest clogs without harming your pipes.
If you want to try a temporary fix before calling us, here are some safe methods:
- Hot water and dish soap – Pour boiling water mixed with dish soap to break up grease and debris.
- Baking soda and vinegar – Pour ½ cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Plunger – A sink or toilet plunger can help dislodge minor clogs.
Frequently Asked Home Electrical Questions
What is a Short or Short Circuit?
A short or a short circuit is the same problem. It occurs when a hot wire comes in contact with the equipment ground or grounded conductor. The hot wire is the one that carries the electrical current. The grounded conductor is known as the white wire or the neutral. The equipment ground is known as the green wire or bare conductor.
Excess heat is created during a short circuit. A spark can be created during a short circuit. This can lead to a fire. Fortunately, a circuit breaker can prevent this from happening.
What is a GFCI Outlet?
A GFCI outlet is designed to stop you from suffering electric shock if moisture is around. If you have a home that was built after 1981, then you probably have GFCI outlets in your bathroom, garages, bedrooms, and bathrooms. You can tell whether an outlet is a GFCI outlet by seeing if there are two buttons on it.
A Light Fixture is Causing my Light Bulbs to Constantly Blow Out. Is This Caused by a Short in the Wires?
This problem is not caused by a short in the wires. Your circuit breaker protects you from the short circuits. You may be able to correct this problem by choosing a bulb with a lower wattage.
You will also need to check the voltage of your home. Many light bulbs are designed to run between 110 to 120 volts. Many homes have voltages that exceed 125 volts. A higher voltage will decrease the lifespan of your light bulbs.
