Why Isn’t My Heat Working?

Here in the Twin Cities, or anywhere for that matter, no one wants to be stuck without heat on a cold winter night. So when your furnace stops working and the heat won’t kick on, homeowners are understandably frustrated. Though this is an unfortunate pickle to be in, there may be something you can do, as a homeowner, in the meantime. These tips will help you troubleshoot your furnace problems before giving us a call.

Troubleshooting Your Furnace:

It Won’t Turn On

This is the most common furnace problem. If you fail to hear the furnace turn on (no fan, blower, gas or flames), the first thing that you should check is the power running to your system. Check your circuit breaker box and make sure that it hasn’t been tripped. Then, check your thermostat to make sure that it is set properly and is reading the correct temperature. Lastly, check the pilot light and fuel source.

It Doesn’t Produce Heat

If you can hear that your furnace turned on but it’s still not producing any heat, your pilot light may not be lit. If your furnace does not run on gas, check your water heater to make sure that it is working properly. Lastly, check the air filters in your home. If these filters are clogged, your furnace may blow cool air.

It Turns Off Before Your House Is Warm Enough

If your furnace runs and blows warm air, but shuts off before your house warms up, you should first check your air filters. As we mentioned above, dirty air filters can keep air from circulating throughout your home properly. If your air filters are clean, you may be losing air somewhere in the ducts of your home. A professional HVAC technician will be able to evaluate your home heating problem.
