What’s The Right Ceiling Fan Direction?

Heating and cooling your home can end up costing a decent amount, but you can start saving with the help of your ceiling fan! Changing the direction of your fan in the summer and winter months gives your HVAC system a break — and your wallet.

Summer Ceiling Fan Direction

In the summer, you want your ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise. By switching the direction that your fan blades turn, you can draw cool air to the surface of a room and push warm air back down. This allows you to set your thermostat at a higher temperature, saving you almost 40 percent on air conditioning bills.

Winter Ceiling Fan Direction

In the winter, your ceiling fans should rotate clockwise and at a low speed to pull cool air up, and in turn warm air down. This will make your room feel warmer, allowing you to lower the temperature of your thermostat, saving you up to 15 percent on heating bills!

How do you switch the fan’s direction?

Most fans have a switch that allows you to reverse the direction that the fan spins. Press the button forward to change the blades for the summer. Press the reverse button to set your fan for the winter.
