You probably know how to turn your sump pump on and off and you may even know the best place to put one in your home. But do you know where the water actually goes and how to properly dispose of it? If you have a sump pump, you now have to be a bit more responsible with where you put the water you pump out of your house.

Are You Pumping The Same Water Repeatedly?

Did you know that if the end point of your sump pump tube is within 10 feet of your home’s foundation you are probably pumping the same water over and over? The closer the tube lies to your home, the more of a chance the water has to be reabsorbed by the same soil it originated from which can lead to a damaged foundation or erosion. Make sure the tube is at least 10 – 20 feet away from the house.

Steer Clear of the Sewers and Your Neighbors

Draining your sump pump into the sewer system can create flooding so this is not a wise course of action. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you are not pumping water into your neighbor’s lot. Not only is it inconsiderate, there are local laws that prohibit you from doing so.
