Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing This Winter

Frozen pipes are winter’s most inconvenient plumbing disaster. To avoid an emergency call this winter, turn to these tips for preventing yours from freezing.

Proper placement. Keep pipes out of attics, crawl spaces and outside walls. By placing your pipes in heated spaces only you’ll avoid potential issues that arise when hot water hits cold air.

Insulation sleeves. If your pipes are already poorly placed and rerouting would cause too many issues, ensure that you get them insulated for protection. Remember, don’t leave any gaps and don’t hesitate to choose thick insulation for added protection.

Seal all cracks. Keep cold air out of pipes in outside walls by sealing all cracks and holes with caulking.

Keep cabinet doors open. Especially during the coldest days, consider leaving cabinet doors that close in pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sink open a crack. This allows warm air to circulate around the pipes.

Let the water run. Opening the faucet and letting the water run with eliminate pressure that has been backed up in the cold pipes. This way, even if a pipe freezes, the continuous water flow will stop the pipe from bursting.
