Why You Need to Rotate Your Home Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are a must-have in any home — but did you know that they are just as useful in the fall and winter as they are in the spring and summer? It’s true! Just as your ceiling fan can cool you down on hot days, it can also help re-distribute warm air during the colder months and even help you save on home heating costs. You’ll want to make sure that your fans are spinning in the right direction for the new season ahead.

Clockwise Rotation

During the winter months, you should change your fan’s rotation to clockwise. When fans rotate this way, they push warm air (that naturally rises to the ceiling) up and then down along the walls and back of the floor. This makes the room feel warmer overall, so that you can lower the thermostat temperature and save money!

Counterclockwise Rotation

This direction is ideal for the summer months. The counterclockwise direction pushes air down from the ceiling towards the floor. This creates a wind chill effect that makes you feel cooler. As a result, you can enjoy the summer without sacrificing comfort!

How do you change your fan’s rotation?

Look around your ceiling fan for a toggle-switch. If your switch is vertical, switch it down during the summer months, and switch it up during the winter months. For horizontal switches, the left switch is usually for the summer while the right is for winter.
