You probably don’t think about your plumbing system on a daily basis, but you should give it some thought every now and then. When this fairly simple system, including hot and cold water supplies and valves, fails your house is going to be in for a soggy mess.
A little plumbing maintenance goes a long way. Follow the tips below to prevent plumbing disasters:
You should flush your sink with hot water after each use. If you experience a clogged drain, pour ½ cup of salt down the drain followed by extremely hot water.
A tiny leak may not be a huge problem at the moment. However, they often lead to much larger leaks that call for a plumber to repair. Keep an eye out and try to detect and fix the problem as early as possible. It is vital to know where your home’s main water shut off valve is located. If there is ever a leak, this is where you should go first.
You can avoid this problem by making sure your pipes are properly insulated before the weather gets too cold. If they do happen to freeze, shut off the water supply to your house, then open a faucet near the blocked area. You can use a hair dryer to warm the frozen pipe (NEVER USE AN OPEN FLAME!).
