How to Fix  Your Garbage Disposal:

  1. Turn off your garbage disposal. Before you go near your garbage disposal clog, it is important that you completely turn the disposal off. Don’t stick anything into your drain until you turn off the power.
  2. Look down the drain. Grab a flashlight and look down the drain. You may be able to see what is causing your blockage. This will help you determine the best course of action or removing the blockage.
  3. Clear the blockage. How you clear your blockage depends on what is clogging your garbage disposal.
    • Manually Turn the Blades – Underneath your sink, you can  manually turn the blades of your disposal to break up some debris. Insert your Allen wrench to manually turn them.
    • Use Pliers to Pull Out Build Up – Grab a pair of pliers and remove any loose food. Never place your hands inside the garbage disposal itself.
    • Clean the P-Trap – Your garbage disposal is attached to a pipe, called a p-trap. Sometimes, sludge buildup can prevent new material from breaking up in your garbage disposal. Remove and clean this pipe by placing a bucket and towels under the sink, removing the trap, and cleaning it.
