What Causes a Pinhole Leak?

Category: Blog

Dean’s blog is a resource of ideas from Dean’s home Services.

A Pinhole leak is a home issue Plumbers deal with on a daily basis. Typically, these holes are less than 1/8 inch wide.  Although very small on the outside of the pipe, a pinhole leak is actually a sign of a much larger corrosion problem inside the pipe and a symptom of long-term corrosion damage. If you live in Minnesota and have hard water there are some steps you can take to avoid these sorts of problems. Nate a Plumber with Dean’s Home Services describes what can cause a Pinhole leak.

Pinhole Leak

Signs That You Have a Pinhole Leak

  • Dropping Water Pressure. One thing a pinhole leak can affect immediately is water pressure. If you’ve noticed a drop in pressure, whether in your shower, your faucet, or anywhere else where you use running water, there could be a leak somewhere.
  • Running Water Meter. Another way you can check for a small leak in your home (or any sized leak for that matter) is by checking your water meter. First, make sure that there is no water running in your house from any of your appliances, and then check the meter. If it’s showing signs of water running, then there might be a leak somewhere in your plumbing.
  • Mold and MildewPinhole leaks are notorious for causing mold and mildew growth because they often occur inside the wall where they go undetected, creating the ideal environment for growth.
  • Pipe DiscolorationThe exterior of your copper pipes should always look copper-colored.  If you’re noticing brown, green, or blue discoloration, that’s an indication of trouble.
  • Water Damage. This is the last and worst sign. If you’re seeing water damage either in your walls, floors, or anywhere in your home, it means there’s been a leak that’s run for quite some time. Water damage can cause mold growth and will weaken the structural foundation of your home when not treated quickly.

It’s summer in Minnesota, and that means lots of hot humid days. You probably spend a lot of time inside so use these AC tips to stay cool this summer. Otherwise, the heat and humidity may end up creeping into your home through the AC vents. Follow these simple AC tips and tricks for keeping your air conditioner running efficiently.

AC Tips That Actually Work

Minnesota, historically speaking, averages above 12 days a year of 90 + plus degree weather and from June – July 2022, Minneapolis hit 90+ degrees at least six times.

We can’t change the weather but we can change how we cool our houses to stay safe on the hottest days of the year. Use these tips to keep your air conditioner running smoothly all summer.

Change the air filter

One of the best ways to keep your air conditioner clean is by replacing the air filter. This is the first layer of protection against particles, allergens, and other contaminants.

When choosing a filter, pay attention to its size. If the filter is too small, it will not be effective. If the filter is too big, it will lose suction power and increase energy costs. Another important factor is the material used to make the filter. Typically, the best air filters are made from synthetic fibers. They are easy to clean, reusable, and highly efficient.

AC Tips for a comfortable home

Keep the outdoor unit clear of anything that can prevent airflow

The outdoor unit of your air conditioner is what brings the cool, fresh air inside your home. This unit can be easily clogged by leaves, sticks, and other debris. If the flow of air is blocked in any way, the indoor unit will have to work harder to cool the home. This leads to an increase in energy consumption.

Be sure to keep the area around the AC unit neat and tidy and check the outdoor unit for possible obstructions and remove them.

Air Conditioner Cleaning

Cleaning your air conditioner is even more important than cleaning your ducts. This is because the air conditioner filters out the air, while the ducts just circulate the air inside your home. Over time, the air conditioner accumulates dirt and grime inside its internal parts.

The excess dust and dirt will reduce cooling efficiency, increase energy consumption, and even lead to health issues. The best way to clean your air conditioner is to hire a professional company to do the job. They have all the necessary equipment and knowledge to thoroughly clean the entire AC unit.

Manufacturers HVAC Tune-Up

The air conditioner was built with proper engineering and design. However, over a few years, the moving parts can get worn out and require maintenance or a tune-up. This service is offered by Dean’s Home Services.

An HVAC company will inspect the entire system and make any necessary repairs to keep your AC unit running well. The tune-up service includes cleaning or replacing parts in the indoor and outdoor units. The technicians will also check the ducts and any other parts of the HVAC system. They will also make any necessary adjustments to the thermostat settings. This way, you can ensure that the AC unit keeps running properly for many more years.

Need more help with your HVAC unit, trust the air conditioning repair and installation experts at Dean’s Home Services.

Technologies that make our lives easier are constantly evolving. We are now seeing rapid advancements in the smart home space, and lighting is one of the fastest-growing segments in this space. It’s predicted the smart home lighting market will grow to a value of over $10 billion by 2024.

There are many reasons why smart lighting has become so popular, but it comes down to three main factors: energy efficiency, ease of use, and security.

Smart home lighting also opens up a world of opportunities for homeowners who may not have had access to light in the past.

Take a look at trends we can expect from smart home lighting in 2022 and beyond…

Smart Home Lighting Trends for 2022

Smart home lighting

Intelligent Lighting Controls

The first trend we see in smart home lighting is increasingly intelligent lighting controls. Many smart home lighting control systems are designed to work with specific brand of light bulbs. However, with the growth of the Internet of Things, we are seeing lights being able to work with other products and systems. This means that lighting controls will become more sophisticated as they link to other systems — such as sensors, cameras, and smart appliances — that can analyze data and provide feedback.

Voice-activated Lighting

Another trend we expect to see in smart lighting is voice-activated lighting. We have already seen this trend take off in smart home assistants like the Amazon Echo, Google Home and Josh.AI. However, we expect to see this functionality expand to other devices, like smart wall switches and remote controls.

This will allow people to easily control light switches and dimmers with their voice, making it easier for homeowners to control their lights remotely. In addition, voice-activated lighting also makes it easier for people with limited mobility to control their lights.

Smart LED Lighting

LED lights have existed for some time, but they have really taken off in the smart home lighting space. One of the main reasons for this is that they are more energy efficient than other forms of lighting.

Additionally, they also allow homeowners to control the level of brightness of their lights remotely, making them more convenient.

lighting Design

Color Changeable Lighting

Another trend we can expect to see in smart home lighting is color changeable lighting. Although not a completely new concept, we expect to see this technology advance as more homeowners become interested in it. Color Changing bulbs are not just for decoration.

This technology can be used to create a well-lit environment that is ideal for different activities, such as reading and relaxation. This means that homeowners have an added level of control over the lighting in their home that is not available with standard light bulbs.

Smart Security Lights

Another trend we can expect to see in smart home lighting is the emergence of smart security and surveillance lights. These types of lights are designed to turn on automatically when people are detected on the property.

This is ideal for homeowners who want some added security without having to install cameras and sensors.
(if you’re interested security cameras and locks, the technology and integration of AI is incredible)

These lights can also be programmed to turn on and off at certain times of the day. What’s more, some brands of smart security lights are even designed to change color when they sense a fire. This means they can double as fire alarms when they detect smoke.

Overall, the future of smart home lighting looks bright. As people become more concerned about the environment and their energy usage, they will be increasingly interested in investing in more efficient light bulbs.

As we progress further into the 2020s, we can expect to see even more advancements in the world of smart home lighting.

Step 2: Remove the cover. Pull the fan cover down gently. If there are metal pins/spring clips on each side, squeeze gently to release the fan cover. You may see just a tab depending on the model.

Step 3: Wash the fan cover in a sink with soap and warm water. Or vacuum to clean the vent cover.

Step 4: Unplug the fixture.

Step 5: Depending on the model of your fan, remove visible screws and motor. (we are going in for a deep cleaning)

Teaching how properly dye an egg isn’t something we at Dean’s Home Services are known for but you’re here so let’s get to it! This recipe is simple to follow, has minimum requirements, and is guaranteed to be a blast.

Hard-boiled eggs

Food coloring

White vinegar (see notes for options if you don’t have vinegar)

Bring a large pot of water to a boil.

Measure ½ cup of boiling water into a canning jar or another heat-safe container. Then, add one teaspoon of vinegar and 10-20 drops of food coloring. Repeat to create additional colors. If you’re dying eggs with kids, allow the dye to cool before proceeding.

Soak the eggs in the dye for around five minutes. Flip the eggs halfway through, to ensure both sides are well coated.

Place the dyed eggs back in their carton and allow them to dry before handling.

If you don’t have vinegar, use lemon juice instead, or just leave it out. Eggs dyed without vinegar will be pastel colored.

Place stickers on the eggs before you dye them to create two-toned designs. Remove the sticker one the eggs have dried to reveal the designs
