How to Prevent Plumbing Problems While You’re Away
The holidays and travel go hand in hand and before you leave to enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation, a few precautions to consider for your home. These easy-to-follow steps will help you prevent plumbing problems while you’re away.

Turn off the main water valve. You might be tempted to leave it on so that you can take a shower or have water in case of an emergency, but if there’s even a small leak, that could be enough to cause significant damage before you return.
Check your gutters. If they’re overflowing or clogged with debris, this could lead to leaks inside your home — and possibly even ruin the roof and walls.
Check your sump pump. If not cleaned regularly, sump pumps can become clogged with sediment and other debris, which can cause them to malfunction during heavy rains or snow melt.
Have someone check in on your home every couple of days while you’re gone (or at least once a week). This will let you know if anything is wrong and give them an opportunity to make sure everything is running smoothly before you get back home again!
